OUT OF BOUNDS: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, ALL MEDIA INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION CURATED BY SHELITA BIRCHETT BENASH, 2015

OBJECTS ARE NOT WITHOUT SPIRIT. AS LIVING THINGS THEY TOUCH US IN UNIMAGINED WAYS.

Dear Artist,

On behalf of Arle Sklar-Weinstein, Luis Perleman and Blue Door Arts Center Gallery, I would like to thank you for accepting our invitation to have your artworks featured in the upcoming February/March “Out of Bounds; Freedom of Expression” exhibition.

My recent election to the Blue Door Arts Center (BDAC) Board of Directors provides me with the opportunity to initiate connecting BDAC stakeholders and collectors to a broader network and community of culturally diverse artists working in all media. As one artist to another, I am compelled to reach out to you personally because I admire the dynamism of your creative practices and artworks. And as a new member of the Board, I am especially excited by the opportunity to engage and educate the Yonkers community and greater Hudson Valley through exposure to high caliber artists whose lives and artworks are steeped in rich cultural, social, geographical, historical and contemporary contexts.

The artists in the “Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression” exhibition are all together fearless in their approaches and uses of materials, techniques and applications. And as the exhibition breaks outside the material gallery space and onto virtual platforms, viewers will be invited into dialogues as they see aspects of how artists are set free through the power of personal narrative, while unfettered creativity pushes and pulls each artists outside the limits of what is familiar and knowable.

My intention with the all media multi-platform elements of the exhibition is to upset the static and stoic nature of the traditional material gallery experience. “Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression” is about breaking outside the box of ideas, being and ways of seeing. The Blue Door Gallery online blog and Facebook page with links to artists websites will offer viewers varied methods of exposure and opportunities for interaction with art objects and the artists who make them. Subsequently, viewers will be challenged to forge their own significant connections with the digital stories and artworks as they are actively engaged in dialogues revolving around art’s value as a participatory culture and meaningful place maker. BDAC will also will also host “Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression” exhibition tours for Yonkers community youth to facilitate community arts education while planting hopeful seeds inside the minds of the next generation of artists, creatives and collectors.

I am honored and excited to work with you all!

Blessed Days,

Shelita Birchett Benash
