OUT OF BOUNDS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION EXHIBITION

AASB is the collective name of a group of artists based in Tokyo who have collaborated on a variety of projects, including a number of short films.

We aim to create and set free something that challenges values, sprouts ideas that provoke and spark debate, excite, and capture the beauty and the cruelty of the human experience.

No mean feat by any account, though it’s something that we must be conscious of in our best endeavours. How are we to awaken ideas in others if we are not being aware of our own actions.

Tuan Hong, The Red Seal and the ASSB Collective came to my attention via, Benjamin Beardsely, one of the actors featured in the short independent film. Ben shared the film with me. The film is beautifully shot. The story is mysterious. I discussed my thoughts with Tuan. Here is part of an exchange; Tuan said he was okay with me sharing.

Shelita:

Your film is poetic and the cinematography is breathtaking. I've never been to Japan. And of course, I've seen lots of movies. However, I can't say I've seen a Japanese film with the type of interiors that you showcase in your film. There is something about the mystique we may have for a foreign country vs its actual existence and movement through time.

Tuan:

I feel blessed to have worked with a pair of very talented cinematographers. I have them to be thankful for the beautiful images. It was one of our intentions to not make the film feel as though it was not filmed in a certain place, hence the extensive use of close ups.

I agree that there is definitely a conflict between how we perceive the known world and what it actually is. I feel that most of the art accepted by the mainstream is generally very orderly and predictable, it seems to be a retort to how the world really is, surreal, contradictory, and far weirder than we can imagine.

I feel most people are afraid of this notion and choose art that comforts them from this truth.

Siovhan and I met online through a mosaic Facebook group called "My Mosaic Friends." Until that point, I had never met a black mosaic artist. I remember how excited we were to find that we lived not far from each other. We were ecstatic to meet in person. Over the past several months, Siovhan and I have become fast friends. I appreciate Siovhan's technical approach to her materials, as well as her impeccable methods of cutting. We are so different in our philosophies regarding styles and techniques within mosaic crafting. Our differences have made our conversations about mosaic craft and design very dynamic. I am honored to have Siovhan's beautiful mosaic work in the Out of Bounds exhibition.

I am in awe of the level of talent and creativity that I have been able to assemble for the Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression exhibition. I was introduced to Anthony's work by my long-time friend, Lisa Kidd. Lisa connected me to his Instagram. I was blown away and knew immediately that I had to have Anthony's work in the Out of Bounds exhibition. Had an inspirational conversation with Anthony Boone. He spoke about how his approach to the paint media changed when he verged into abstraction; risk-taking became an integral part of his artistic expression. He was no longer concerned about 'messing up.' The freedom of spirit and action is palpable in Anthony Boone's paintings.

Curatorial Statement by Shelita Birchett Benash

“I always wanted to be free.”~ Thorton Dial

Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression is an international all media exploration of how deep creativity and fearlessness push artists outside the lines of traditional methods, applications and ways of seeing. The featured media are emblematic expressions of the untethered spirit that knows no limits.Out of Bounds seizes upon that symbiotic dialogue between viewer and artwork. And through social media’s real-time connectivity; the artist also becomes part of the conversation. With this action, the exhibition will attempt to break out of the static material gallery space; onto virtual platforms. By using various 21st century technological modes of direct communication; this exhibition serves as a fluid work-in-progress exposing the featured artists to the viewer’s gaze and gallery experience. Out of Bounds seeks to facilitate perspective cross-connections that forge new and significant links between viewers and artists, while revealing art’s value as a participatory culture and meaningful place maker. The interactive nature of the exhibition gives viewers the ability to openly engage with the artists as they consider the artworks, the power of personal narrative and unfettered creativity.

“Out of Bounds: Freedom of Expression” has a corresponding Facebook page, Tumblr blog and Twitter account where viewers are encouraged to actively participate digitally with the artists. QR codes inside the exhibition also take visitors directly to Vimeo.com, where they can watch short films and videos by the “Out of Bounds” digital storytellers
